About the Spanish Grand Prix™ History
The Spanish Grand Prix™ race is one of the world’s most prestigious and oldest motor racing events, with the first race being held in 1913 as a race for touring cars on a 300-kilometre road circuit near Madrid.
In 1926, this race was moved to Circuito Lasarte because of financial difficulties. However, in 1935, the racing stopped due to Spain’s civil war. Luckily, the race returned in 1951, joining the Grand Prix™ championship at the Pedralbes street circuit in Barcelona.
The Spanish Grand Prix™ was first hosted at its current venue, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, in 1991, when Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell went head-to-head. Over the years, this race has been won by some of the greatest names in motor racing, including drivers such as Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton.

The foundation stone was set in 1989, and the first race on this track was during the 1991 Spanish Touring Car Championship.

This year, this track’s scoreboard at the pit lane exit was remodelled to include a more contemporary signalling tower, in addition to newly-painted and replaced kerbs and tyre barriers. The long pit building’s hospitality and corporate areas have also been enlarged and remodelled.
